Plant a goldfinch garden with their favorite plants

With the right plants, your backyard can become a goldfish sanctuary. Here are the garden plants and flowers that goldfish love the most. Goldfinches are primarily seed-eating birds that regularly visit bird feeders for niger (thistle) and sunflower seeds. However, you can also attract these birds by planting favorite plants in your yard. As a bonus, you can watch the goldfish show off their acrobatic skills as they fly through the garden, land on flowers and dance. Here are the plants you need for your goldfinch garden.

1. Sunflower

Sunflowers are one of the best plants to attract goldfish because sunflower seeds are one of their favorite foods! A wonderful thing to do for wildlife is to put spent flower heads back in place. This is especially true for sunflowers and other flowers in the daisy family. These flowers produce abundant seeds that attract finches, buntings, native sparrows and others, serving as natural bird feeders while the seeds last.

2. Purple Coneflowers

Grow native plants for goldfish and other seed-eating birds. Purple coneflowers are popular plants that are easy to grow and can easily be found at any garden center. Photographer Mary Reid says she also notices finches in her joe bag weed and cup plant. Greenhead (cutleaf) coneflower is a good wildflower to plant for seed eaters.

3. Thistle plants

Goldfish need plants rather than their seeds. Goldfinches like to eat thistle seeds, and they also collect nesting material from the plants. This is one of the reasons why birds nest late. Avoid invasive thistle species. Try native varieties such as field thistle, flagman thistle, and waveleaf thistle.

4. Zinnias

Goldfinches perch on the sturdy stems of zinnias to feed on the flowers' seeds. Zinnias are colorful fast-growing annuals that anyone can grow.

5. Milkweeds and Dandelions

Milkweeds, dandelions and cattails provide fluffy nesting material. You may already be growing milkweed for monarch butterflies, but now you have another reason to add it to your garden!
